Composition of Blood

Blood is a fluid connective tissue that consists of plasma, blood cells and platelets. It circulates throughout our body delivering oxygen and nutrients to various cells and tissues. It makes up 8% of our body weight. An average adult possesses around 5-6 litres of blood.

Plasma

Plasma also called blood plasma, the liquid portion of blood. Plasma serves as a transportation medium for delivering nutrients to the cells of the various organs of the body and for transporting waste products delivered from cellular metabolism to the kidneys, liver, and lungs for excretion.

Blood cells

Blood cell, also called a hematopoietic cell, haemocyte,  or hematocyte, is a cell produced through haematopoiesis and found mainly in the blood. Major types of blood cells include red blood cells and white blood cells.

Platelets

Platelets or thrombocytes, are small, colourless cell fragments in our body that form clots and stop or prevent bleeding. Platelets are made in our bone marrow, the sponge-like tissue inside our bones.
